Re-read the poem again (this is how Gogol characterized the genre of his work) - after all, this is a story about the real "business in Russian" of the first half of the 19th century.
The story of the adventures of Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov was conceived by NV Gogol as a three-volume work. Judging by the fragmentary information that came down to us, the author wanted to show in his poem the whole diversity of Russian life. The plot of the poem was suggested to Gogol AS Pushkin (as well as the plot of the "Inspector").
Unfortunately, the work has remained unfinished. Only the first volume was published, the manuscript of the second volume was burned by the author, and the third volume remained only in rough drafts.
